Highlights and our reaction to Manitoba’s throne speech

November 22, 2017
There is a lot on the Manitoba government’s plate, with the recent throne speech touching on everything from better aligning post-secondary programs to launching the province’s first social impact bond.
There is a lot to digest, but a few highlights stood out for Winnipeg Chamber members:

  • A commitment to restructuring economic development efforts so they are more effective in delivering investments to the City of Winnipeg;
  • Acting on the advice of an external review and the Premier’s Enterprise Team, the government will identify Manitoba’s economic sectors with the strongest growth potential;
  • A continued effort to reduce red tape; and
  • A push to modernize procurement.

A good portion of the speech focused on the child and family services system, housing and healthcare, which also clearly impacts the prosperity of our community.

It is important to remember throne speeches are typically a mile wide and an inch deep. What really matters is what comes after the speech, as governments follow through on – or fall off – their various commitments.

While there weren’t many new initiatives in this throne speech, it reiterated the government’s primary focus is on getting the province’s books back to black. Your Chamber will be there every step of the way to make sure the voice of business is heard on Broadway.
