Following another successful and constructive year of the program, Leadership Winnipeg is now accepting applications for its 2019-20 year.
”Thinking on the program as a whole, it wasn’t at all what I was expecting, but was also exactly what I needed,” says Sarah DeGagne, of Leadership Winnipeg’s class of 2019. “There’s so much going on here that we, as a community, have to be proud of. We are a more diverse city than I could have realized, and I’m truly thankful for the opportunity. I would absolutely recommend this program to anyone who has an interest in getting to know Winnipeg a little better, and I’m really going to miss the sessions. I’ll be looking for more ways to be involved in the future.
“It really was an amazing opportunity.”
For more than a decade now, The Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce and Volunteer Manitoba have partnered to offer Leadership Winnipeg, a 10-session leadership program (plus class project), which runs from September through June. The program provides experiences that inspire and help individuals to develop an understanding of themselves, their community and their role within it.
The day-long sessions, held once a month, are hosted in the community and focuses on a theme. The sessions include tours and guest speakers, plus an opportunity to interact with those speakers. The program is primarily learning by experiencing as opposed to textbook-based learning. A portion of the day is also devoted to leadership development – providing the tools that will enhance the participant’s communication, facilitation, collaboration and time management skills.
”I’ve grown an even stronger fondness and appreciation for our great city and the fantastic people who are doing amazing things in it,” says Mike Choi, also from Leadership Winnipeg’s class of 2019. “If not for the program, I may have never found the opportunities that have opened up for me, like advocating for social enterprises and volunteering at the Immigrant Centre. Leadership Winnipeg has inspired me to work harder to contribute to the growth and diversity of our city.”
